Wausau Architecture Tuesday – John Marshall Elementary

WHAT!?! It’s Tuesday again! Today we could be found on Wausau’s Southeast Side to see one of its most prominent buildings – John Marshall Elementary.

John Marshall was built in 1922 in the Collegiate style – with some Late Gothic elements. The architects were Parkinson and Dockendorff. Even with the Later additions it remains a fine example of the style.

At that time m it consisted of 4 rooms on a 5 acre plot of land. The first students were Kindergarten, 1st grade, introduction to 1st grade and second grade. A total of 23 students were enrolled the first year.

In 1930 an 4 additional rooms were added. Other additions include:

-1947 addition by Oppenhamer & Obel.

-1955 addition by Foster and Yasko

-2000 addition by SDS Architects, Eau Claire.

Today it temains a vibrant part df the community – as a school, a great piece of architecture, and community meeting place.

Wausau recognized its importance and declared John Marshall a historic landmark in 2022.
