Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church

Description

The parish known today as the Church of the Resurrection traces its roots back to the early 20th century in Wausau. Originally it was founded as St. James Parish, the first English-speaking Catholic parish in Wausau, organized in 1905 under the leadership of Fr. Joseph Brennan.

Its present building was constructed in 1911–1912, and the church was dedicated in 1912. During construction, the dome collapsed, but the building was completed and has been in use since that time.

In 1998, the parish underwent a name change: St. James became the Parish of the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ (commonly “Church of the Resurrection”).

The building at 621 N 2nd Street in downtown Wausau remains the home of the parish.

Over the years the parish has continued to develop its facilities. For example, in 2015 a major addition — the “Family Center” — was planned and built between the 1912 church building and the rectory (built 1949), with the project designed to harmonize the varying elevations and architectural styles of the older buildings.

The parish is part of what are called the “Eastside Parishes,” together with St. Michael Parish in Wausau; the two share resources, a parish office, and collaborate in ministry
