About Friends of Wausau Historic Landmarks

Friends of Wausau Historic Landmarks (FOWHL) is a community-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating, educating about, and advocating for the preservation of Wausau, Wisconsin’s rich architectural heritage and historic places. Our work grew out of a shared concern over the loss of significant historic structures — and a belief that preserving these buildings enriches our culture, strengthens our sense of place, and honors the stories that make our community unique.

Why It Matters

Historic preservation isn’t only about protecting old buildings — it’s about caring for the places that shape who we are. These structures tell the story of Wausau’s people, industries, artistry, and community evolution. When we preserve them, we preserve identity, memory, beauty, and continuity for future generations.
