Elks Club

Description

Origins & Construction

The Elks fraternity chapter in Wausau, Wisconsin — Lodge No. 248 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks — has been a civic fixture in the region for many decades. The current building at 414 Scott Street, Wausau was designed specifically for the lodge and is referred to as the “Elks Lodge building”.

According to the 2018 “Historical & Architectural Resources” survey for Wausau, the building was designed by the architectural firm Oppenhamer & Obel and construction began in Spring 1923 under contractor William Anderes. At the time the estimated cost was about $80,000, quickly increasing to near $95,000 by the time of laying the cornerstone in July 1923.

Work continued, and the building was completed and dedicated in the first week of September 1924, at which time the fully furnished cost reached approximately $130,000.

Architectural Features & Original Layout

The building was conceived as a comprehensive club facility for the Elks, combining recreational, civic, and social functions. The basement originally housed six bowling lanes, which was a rather significant amenity for the time.

On the first floor was the lodge room — where the Elks conducted their meetings and ceremonies — while other parts of the building included an auditorium/ballroom, kitchen and dining facilities, member lounges, and likely offices or meeting rooms.

While the survey document does not go into deep stylistic detail, the building’s long service for a fraternal organization and its multi-functional arrangement illustrate the values of civic engagement, social fellowship, and community support typical of the Elks during that era.

Significance & Community Role

The Elks Lodge building in Wausau has served not just as a meeting place, but as a hub for philanthropy, social life, and community service. According to a more recent article, the Wausau Elks lodge has, over its history, donated roughly $5.3 million to local causes.

Reaching the 100-year milestone of the building (circa 2023) underscores both the longevity of the institution and of the physical structure.

Later Renovations & Current Status

Over its lifespan, the building has seen updates and improvements to maintain its relevance. For example, the historical survey notes that by 1999 an elevator addition had been placed on the west side, and in 2002 landscaping was re-worked, with window replacements following in 2004.

As of 2024, the lodge hosted an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony to showcase newly remodeled venue space within the building, marking continued investment in its role in the community.
